Lynnwood High Closed For Good, but plans up in air for old Location?

Doors closed for good...

I have only really been in the gym and the parking lot of Lynnwood high school as a parent of a visiting team member during sports, but it still seems sad to me that the old school will be torn down forever.  The gym and bleachers especially were horrendous, but there was still a sense of history that is hard to recapture and install in new buildings.

The new school over on North Rd is coming along and looking amazing - I guess it should since it is costing almost $100 million according to reports!  What a facility!  I know it will be exciting for all the students to start their journeys in this state of the art school!  The very cool part is how green the building is going to be!

Plans for the old location?  Cypress Equities from Texas entered in to an agreement with the Edmonds School District as far back as 2006 I think to lease the land for 99 years for a reported $140 million.  The plan was to put in mixed use retail and even a hotel.  That latest, though is not looking good as the developer is rethinking their plan for the site.  I don't know how these things are "agreed to", but hopefully there was something equivalent to earnest money in residential transactions that was significant in case of default...

Indeed, the plans for the old school seem to be in limbo. Of course with commercial vacancies up, no one is going to rush to add more on the site of the old high school.  The interesting thing is the fact that people are still going to the mall.  Which brings up my other point about more development in that area.

What I think they really need to address is the traffic around the mall before they expand to the North.  As busy as the roads are around the mall, it almost feels like it needs its own off ramp off of I-5.  Which isn't such a bad idea if you think about it.

My other question is what would be the best use of that land to the North.  There enough room for an indoor water park?  Now that would be cool!

Hi Jacquie - We are about a mile from Lowes at that exit and you are right - it gets busy!  Especially around holiday time!  We choose to take the back way near the John L Scott over there, but Lynnwood should address the freeway exit issue - most people get so turned around and the intersection at Poplar and 196th should have a freeway overpass so that you could decide to go straight to the mall that way:)  I think it would help a lot!

I personally loved the IKEA rumor that was going around in regards to the old Lynnwood High School space, but that doesn't seem to be real.  I think traffic in general will be a lot better for the mall without the high school kids going and leaving school, but I shudder to think about North Road - that has always been my back road short cut to Mill Creek!!!    :)
